5 “Get Rich” Lessons We Learned From Anna Delvey

Love her or hate her, there’s no one quite like Anna Delvey. If you’ve watched Inventing Anna, or follow the real Anna Delvey (Sorokin), you’ll see that this is a girl who knows how to ask for what she wants and get it. Did she fraud a ton of people and end up in jail? Yes, but not without teaching us some valuable lessons.

Here are 5 get rich lessons we learned from Anna Delvey.

1- Ask for what you want

As women, we often have a hard time just asking for what we want without a “sorry to bother you” prefix. “Um, sorry to bother you, but could you please pay that invoice I sent to you two weeks ago?” Anna Delvey would NEVER! She would also never pay said invoice if she was on the opposite end of this scenario, but that’s besides the point. If you want something, ask for it. You want a pay raise? Ask. You want someone to fund your project? Ask. The worst they can say is no.

2- Fake it till’ you make it

Imposter syndrome is real, and it can really affect our ability to move ahead in life. You don’t feel like you’re worthy of a raise, so you don’t ask. You don’t feel like you’re a “real” author, so you don’t write the book. Anna went to New York City as a completely anonymous nobody and fooled everyone into thinking she was a rich heiress waiting for her trust fund to kick in. This ties into manifestation too, and the “acting as if” method. If you want to make more money, have the confidence of someone who makes more money. If you want to be an author, act like an author. As long as you aren’t actually out there scamming people, nobody is going to question you.

3- Follow your dreams

Anna knew exactly what she wanted and went for it with no apologies. She wanted to travel, to be rich and admired, to be famous (which she now has thanks to being caught and having books and Netflix shows about her). The simple lesson in all of this is to follow your dreams and not let anyone tell you that you can’t. Unless your dream is something illegal- don’t do that.

4- Don’t let your past define you

Who is Anna Delvey and where is she from? Seriously, where is that accent from? Anna was born in Russia, but grew up in Germany in what seems like your standard middle class household. After that, she went to school in Paris, before finally settling on a glamorous life in the good ol USA. Because her life was “so basic”, she completely shed her existing image and created an entirely new identity. While I don’t think we should all be lying about who we are, there’s something to be said about reinventing yourself. If you don’t like how you were raised, the area you grew up in, etc, simply reinvent your life. Work towards something new, and become whoever you want to be.

5- Confidence is key

If we can say “I want to be paid more money”, as confidently as Anna says “I sent you a wire transfer!”, we’re on our way. This ties into faking it till’ you make it. Confident people get what they want more than insecure people, because they know how to fearlessly ask for it. Confidence is something that often comes with experience and time, but it’s also a skill that can be worked on. Some ways to work on your confidence are:

  • Say confidence boosting affirmations every day

  • Journal your thoughts. Dig deep to find out where your lack of confidence comes from and how you can fix it

  • Realize that you are NOT an imposter. Everyone starts somewhere, and you deserve to get paid, publish your book, get that collab as much as anyone else

  • Try therapy. There is no shame in going to therapy to work on building confidence

  • Surround yourself with supportive people- friends, family members, and significant others that see your vision and support it
